Google is rolling out a new Search Labs experiment that creates an AI-powered personalised audio news digests and allows users to quickly go through the important events happening around the world based on users’ interests.
Called “Daily Listen”, the experiment leverages users’ search history and activity on Google Discover to generate a concise audio episode, typically around 5 minutes long, summarising the latest stories and topics relevant to the users, as per a report in 9to5google.
It is basically listening to a news podcast that is tailored to users, instead of something that is targeted at a larger audience.
How to access “Daily Listen”
US-based Android and iPhone users can enable Daily Listen in Search Labs starting today. It may take up to a day for the first personalised episode to be generated.
To access Daily Listen, simply look for the “Space” carousel beneath the search bar in the Google app on Android or iOS.
Tap the Daily Listen card, and a full-screen player will appear, complete with a text transcript and playback controls.
As per Google, the experiment utilizes Google’s Gemini AI model and allows users to provide feedback on the generated content. Users can also explore related stories and search for more information within the Daily Listen interface.
“Daily Listen” is similar to NoteBooLM’s “Audio Overview”
Google previewed at I/O 2024 in May, NotebookLM’s “Audio Overview” feature that turns documents, slides, and charts into “engaging audio discussions.” The company rolled out this feature in September last year.
To access this feature, simply open a notebook in NotebookLM and navigate to the high-level guide. There, you’ll find a new “Generate” button that activates the Audio Overview.
Once activated, two AI “hosts” will engage in a lively conversation, summarising sources, connecting key topics, and even injecting some lighthearted conversation.
